The Amarillo Area Foundation’s history began in 1957 with a dream and a challenge to address the healthcare needs facing the Texas Panhandle. The Foundation made the dream a reality by establishing Amarillo’s medical center. The Medical Center, now named the Harrington Regional Medical Center, specializes in a wide range of services, making the Panhandle home to a world-class medical center. The Harrington Regional Medical Center keeps Panhandle families close to home while they face challenges regarding their health.
As the Panhandle’s needs changed, the Foundation listened and diligently worked to respond. In the 1960s, the Foundation expanded its leadership role through discretionary grantmaking as a vehicle for improving the quality of life in the Texas Panhandle. In the 1970s, the first scholarship fund was established to support students from our area in their pursuit of higher education.
Then, in 1988, the Foundation received the most significant gift in its history. The Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation and its
$68 million in assets changed from a private foundation to a public supporting organization of the Amarillo Area Foundation.
This support allowed the Amarillo Area Foundation to expand its programs.
More recently, in the 1990s and 2000s, the Amarillo Area Foundation has expanded its role beyond fundraiser and grantmaker.
The Foundation works with Panhandle nonprofit organizations through the Nonprofit Service Center while facilitating a number of other successful programs and initiatives.
Today, the combined assets of the Amarillo Area Foundation and its public supporting organization, The Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation, total more than $220 million. The Foundations have provided grants in excess of $140 million since their respective inceptions. Of the 760-plus national community foundations, the Amarillo Area Foundation consistently ranks in the top 50% in total assets. The Foundation offers investment options designed to meet maximum growth and asset allocations, and provide greater disbursements for the future.
